The DC Universe is getting a reboot, with a huge slate of new movies and TV shows announced from co-chiefs Peter Safran and James Gunn. One lingering question is what will become of The Flash, given the ongoing mental health and legal challenges for star Ezra Miller. And while Safran and Gunn aren’t committing to bringing Miller back into the fold, they aren’t ruling it out either.
“Ezra is completely committed to their recovery,” Safran said, reported by Deadline. “We’re fully supportive of that journey that they’re on right now.”
Safran said that focus on recovery means now isn’t the right time to talk about Miller returning for future DCU movies, but they’re open to it.
“When the time is right, when they feel they are ready to have the discussion, we’ll all figure out what the best way forward is,” Safran said. “But right now, they are completely focused on their recovery. And in our conversations with them over the last couple of months, it feels like they’re making enormous progress.”
Gunn also chimed in regarding the upcoming Flash movie, saying it’s “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made,” reports The Wrap.
Miller recently pleaded guilty to unlawful trespass for a burglary incident from last May, resulting in a year of probation and a fine. Miller had taken part in a string of incidents, including disorderly conduct at a Hawaiian bar, an assault charge for an incident at a private gathering, and a retraining order filed by the parents of a minor. Miller issued a statement last August saying they went through a time of intense crisis and were suffering complex mental health issue, and had begun treatment.

The upcoming slate of DC films and shows includes new movies surrounding Superman, Batman, and a TV series about the Green Lanterns, but no mention of the Flash. The upcoming film is considered part of the Elseworlds brand, which means it takes place outside of the shared film and TV continuity that will start in 2025 with Superman Legacy.
